The West Virginia University (WVU) baseball team is heading to Tucson, Arizona for the NCAA College Baseball Tournament! This marks another milestone in an impressive season, underscored by key performances and dedicated coaching.
The Selection Process
For the second consecutive year, six Big 12 baseball programs were selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Regional play begins Friday, May 31 in a double-elimination format. It ties for the Conference’s highest number of selections since 2017 and is the third consecutive season, and the 21st time in 27 seasons, that at least five teams have been selected. The Big 12’s six teams are the third-most of any Conference.
Notable Achievements
The highlight of WVU’s season has undoubtedly been JJ Wetherholt. As part of his rigorous routine, Wetherholt is declining all interview requests to better focus on what really matters. After all, there’s not much time in the day for anything other than practice, games, yoga, weightlifting, class and—an equally important item—lights out by 9 p.m.
Outstanding Coaching
Randy Mazey, who has more than 20 years of collegiate baseball coaching experience, has been named West Virginia University’s 19th head baseball coach. During Mazey’s tenure at TCU, his teams won six regular season and three Mountain West Conference tournament titles. Additionally, prior to this year’s draft, 15 pitchers have been drafted in the last five seasons and four pitchers have earned All-America honors.
Looking Ahead
The excitement continues as WVU competes in the highly anticipated tournament. With consistent records and standout players, there’s a lot riding on these games. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team strives for success on a national stage.
