What We Know About Netflix Horror Series Midnight Mass

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan is at the top of his game right now. In 2018, he created and directed the award-winning Netflix series ‘The Haunting of Hill House’. This series was such as success that it was announced in February 2019 that Netflix was ordering a second season of the horror series, for which Trevor Macy is an executive producer. However, this is not the only horror series created by Mike Flanagan that you can expect to see on Netflix in the near future as, alongside Trevor Macy, he has been busy working on another series to send chills up your spine.

Netflix has revealed that they have issued a series order for a new horror series called ‘Midnight Mass’, says TVLine. It says that the horror story unfolds over seven episodes, and the series is called ‘Midnight Mass’, although it is in no way connected to the comic book series of the same name by John Rozum.

The setting for the chilling story is an isolated island community. Following the arrival of a man of the cloth in town, members of the community begin to witness some rather unsettling phenomena. If Flanagan’s previous work in the horror genre is anything to go by, the series will have viewers gripped and sitting on the edge of their seats in suspense.

Mike Flanagan is set to direct this series and act as an executive producer alongside Ted Macy. They inked the deal back in February, at the same time as the second season of ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ was ordered, says Variety. Both orders from Netflix are part of a multi-year overall television deal that will see Flanagan and Macy continuing to collaborate on projects that are exclusively for Netflix. Their partnership is under the banner of Intrepid Pictures, which is the company that will remain responsible for producing both films and television series by the duo.

The second season of ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ is also part of the deal. While the first season was based on the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson, the title for the second season is ‘The Haunting of Bly House’ and it is based on the gothic horror novella ‘The Turn of the Screw’ by Henry James.

In relation to the second season of ‘Hill House’, there has also been some more information released. It has been revealed that Victoria Pedretti who was in the first season, has also been cast in the follow-up series, although it is not known if this is playing the same character or if she is taking on a completely new role. Others who starred in the first season included Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton, and Henry Thomas. It is unclear whether any of these actors are returning for a second season of the horror franchise.

‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘The Haunting of Bly House; are not the only projects on which Flanagan and Macy are working on as part of their deal with Netflix. In fact, the duo has had a very busy schedule over the last year and this will continue over the coming year. Other projects on which they have worked together include films such as ‘Before I Wake’, ‘Gerald’s Game’, and ‘Hush’.

Currently, the pair are working on ‘Doctor Sleep’, which is a sequel to ‘The Shining’. This film is based on the 2013 Stephen King novel, and the feature film adaptation is now in post-production, The Warner Bros. film stars Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson. Flanagan wrote the screenplay adaptation and has directed the film, while Macy is producing alongside Jon Berg. The film is set for release on November 8, 2019.

Flanagan and Macy have a well-established professional relationship, which should help them to work easily together as they have a good understanding of how the other works. In fact, they have now been working alongside each other in making films and television series as they have collaborated since 2014.

Their very first project together was the 2014 supernatural psychological horror film ‘Oculus.’ This film was directed, edited, and co-written by Mike Flanagan and co-produced by Ted Macy. Starring in this film was Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Annalise Basso, Rory Cochrane, and Katee Sackoff. It was made on a limited budget of $5 million, but it was a commercial success as it took $44 million at the worldwide box office. The film also received predominantly positive reviews from critics, so it helped to establish both Flanagan and Macy in the film industry.

Overall, it looks like there are some exciting things to come via the collaboration between Mike Flanagan and Ted Macy under the Umbrella of Intrepid Pictures. Their work is mostly in the horror genre, so anything they create is something that horror fans should keep an eye out for.

As for ‘Midnight Mass’, there is still lots of information to follow as neither Netflix nor anyone involved in the production of this new horror series is giving much away at this point. It will be particularly interesting to find out more about the storyline and who has been cast in the lead roles of the upcoming series.

Only time will tell whether this series will be as successful and popular as ‘The Haunting of Hill House’. However, if Flanagan and Macy’s previous track record is anything to go by, this series should become a success that is enjoyed by viewers. Fans of their work and horror series enthusiasts still have a while to wait before they can enjoy ‘Midnight Mass’. Although an official premiere date has not been released by Netflix as yet, it is believed that the series will not be available for streaming until 2020.
