There’s a certain prop from The Last Jedi that means more than people might think. The golden dice that hang above the console in the Millennium Falcon are far older than anyone just coming into their Star Wars fandom might realize. In fact some fans have allowed this to slip their minds since the dice made an appearance in Star Wars IV: A New Hope. They’ve been a part of the Falcon since the franchise began, but have always been seen as little more than a prop, so it’s easy to see why a lot of people wouldn’t know about them. Their importance has a lot to do with the Falcon itself and the part it’s come to play in the franchise.
We all know that Han Solo, Chewbacca, and the Millennium Falcon have been pretty much integral to the story of Star Wars since it’s inception. The famed smuggler and his wookie companion and their iconic ship have done their share of fighting the Empire and bringing down a regime that was eventually usurped by something even worse. But the dice that adorned the Falcon have their own backstory and it’s kind of telling really even if it’s not all that mysterious. As it goes, the dice were used in a game of Correllian Spike, a version of a different game called sabaac that’s usually played with cards. The rumor is that Han won the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian, as is already in the story, with those dice. That’s the tale that’s been devised but it’s something that makes a lot of sense considering that Han isn’t overly sentimental but when it comes to his ship there are only a few other things in his life that he values more. For Han and Chewie the Falcon meant freedom to roam the stars and do what they want, and the reminder of how she came to be in his possession was no doubt a special memory that he wanted to keep, as it marked the day that the two of them finally made good on something and of course it was one of the few times he ever got one over on Lando.
The rivalry between Han and Lando and their friendship also has something to do with the Falcon since Lando doesn’t like to lose, but he also values Han as a friend and knew that during Return of the Jedi that bringing the Falcon back in one piece meant a lot to his buddy. The story of the Falcon and her trusty crew goes way back in stories that are no longer considered canon, but there are some things that Disney is going to have to grin and bear if it wants to keep any sense of continuity within the franchise. The dice are a nice touch that was added in order to give a bit of further back story to the Millennium Falcon, now we can only hope that we’ll see them again in the Solo movie.
