The Cannes Film Festival saw the much-anticipated premiere of Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1 on May 19. Kevin Costner, who stars in and directed the film, provided a glimpse into his dedication to the project at a recent press conference.
Kevin Costner’s Personal Investment
During the conference, Costner addressed questions regarding his significant financial contributions to the film. He revealed that he had personally raised approximately $50 million of the film’s budget. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the decision I needed to make. It’s like, wow, why am I having to do this? I think I’m making mainstream entertainment
, he said.
Elaborating further, he explained his philosophy on personal investment in projects he believes in. You can spend your life just trying to make your pile grow bigger and bigger. And I’ve not been really terribly great at that. I’m like anyone else; I’d like it to be big. But not at the expense of not doing what I feel like I’d love to do
, stated Costner.
A Grand Vision
Despite the financial hurdles, Costner remains committed to producing content with high entertainment value. If no one will help me do it and I believe strongly in its entertainment value– there’s commerce on my mind
, he noted. Yet, he emphasizes that financial considerations do not overshadow his artistic instincts.
At the press event, Costner also shared insights into the immersive nature of Horizon, comparing its expansive storytelling with the Western series Yellowstone. He noted, The movie is a journey. It’s not a plot movie
.
The Journey Continues
Costner mentioned that he was three days into production on Chapter 3 when he paused operations to promote Chapter 1. It was so important to me to come to a place where movies are viewed in an open way
, he commented regarding the Cannes premiere.
This appears to be just the beginning for Horizon: An American Saga. Enthusiasts of epic Westerns eagerly await as more chapters unfold, showcasing Costner’s enduring vision and uncompromising dedication.
