Jason Derulo was fuming on his Instagram account after American Airlines didn’t let him check his bags for free. Derulo and his entourage were trying to board a flight to Miami when the airline told him there was no room for his 19 items of luggage. In an attempt at compromise one of the members of Derulo’s group agreed to wait with the bags for the next flight so that Derulo could board the plane. However, things got ugly when the airline asked for $6,000 for the one man to check all the bags by himself.
In an explicit-filled video the star ranted: “I spent millions on your airline throughout the past ten years between myself and my entire staff but have still experienced racial discrimination today at Miami airport.” When Derulo heard about the charge he demanded that the plane stop on the runway. After a verbal confrontation with the pilot, Derulo was eventually returned to the airport where 15 police officers were waiting for him.
Derulo, still fuming, said “If I wasn’t Jason Derulo I would be in cuffs. It is 100% racial because the initial thought in peoples minds is that these hoodlums are causing problems.”
Do you agree with Derulo here? I personally think there’s not enough information. While I agree that there’s a much better way to do business than to ask for $6,000 for one guy who was doing a favor for his group, but is this racism? It sounds to me like this is an airline that was greedy and trying to take advantage of a celebrity’s money. Does this have to do with the color of his skin? I’d have to say no. While there have been countless bouts of racism against black entertainers this doesn’t seem to qualify. Again, maybe I don’t have enough information but I think regardless of color, an airline’s going to try and milk you for every penny you have. Bag checking is the newest scam and I don’t care if you’re famous or not, the airline is going to try and take advantage of you.
Seems to me that Derulo’s response was a bit excessive. What do you think?
