The new season of Doctor Who hasn’t been hitting the viewership numbers that showrunner Russell T. Davies and fans were hoping for. During a recent interview with The Radio Times, Davies candidly discussed the status of upcoming seasons.
Season 3 Challenges
Davies also spoke out about the challenges of writing for season 3, saying that the pressure and expectations were high. He mentioned that balancing the series’ legacy while bringing fresh ideas was one of the main difficulties he faced.
I’m working on the fourth script now for season 3. It’s not actually commissioned, that’s still up in the air. But that’s the same for every TV programme. I shouldn’t say we’re confident, because that’s asking for a fall, but we’re very confident, to be honest. And we’ll just keep going,” said Davies.
Future Uncertainty
Regarding Doctor Who’s future, both Disney and BBC have been tight-lipped. There is much speculation among fans about the direction the show will take with Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor. Despite ongoing uncertainties, Davies remains hopeful yet cautious.
Ncuti Gatwa’s Impact
Ncuti Gatwa’s entry into the role has been significant. He shares his sentiment about diversity and representation in an iconic show like Doctor Who:
It warms my heart to know that little Black kids out there will be like, ‘Oh, I can be The Doctor.’ It feels like a huge, lovely responsibility.
Despite the current challenges with ratings, Gatwa’s presence is positively influencing perceptions of diversity within the series.
Upcoming Episodes
Info on upcoming episodes continues to trickle out. For instance, Episode 6 titled ‘Rogue,’ penned by Loki’s Kate Herron, promises a Bridgerton-style extravaganza as the Doctor and Ruby end up in Regency-era Bath.
The Role of Disney+
Doctor Who is set to make its first-ever new-season release simultaneously worldwide, as announced earlier this year. This collaboration with Disney+ potentially aims to broaden its global audience base despite local rating challenges.
No Departure for Millie Gibson
On another note, Russell T. Davies confirms Millie Gibson isn’t leaving Doctor Who.
Her continued involvement aims to maintain some consistency amid other cast changes and ensures continuity within the series’ evolving storylines.
