Well, that was likely one of the most courteous food fights in the history of food fights, not to mention a giant waste of food for comedy but also a hilarious way to perform a back and forth kind of spat that kept getting out of hand. Seriously, if you didn’t at least chuckle at this you might need your sense of humor checked because it was pretty cool to see Brad Pitt and Jimmy Fallon go at it in this manner, and the ending was particularly nice since Fallon got left with the check and the proverbial egg on his face. Don’t mess with the Pitt man, just don’t do it. As Kaitlin Menza of Delish tells it this isn’t Fallon’s first time dealing with another celebrity in a food situation as he’s done it a few times and it’s been just as funny each time considering that the manner in which he does these things is kind of outrageous and enough to make you roll your eyes while smiling. A bucket of tater tots? Thirty hot dogs? A seafood tower and a 3-tiered wedding cake? Yikes, even in his Ocean’s 11 days it doesn’t seem as though Pitt could have put away that mountain of food.
But the gag works all the same since trying to imagine either man downing everything that was put in front of them is hilarious enough, but one red M&M and toothpaste and orange juice were definitely deliberate jabs that were enough to crack a person up. It’s funny enough when you remember back in Ocean’s 11 that you hardly ever saw Brad Pitt without something to eat or drink on screen. There was a simple solution given for this and it’s enough to make you grin and kind of grimace in the same instant once you realize the implications. Rusty Ryan, his character in the movie, almost always had something in hand, be it a dish of this or that, a burger, or even just chips or a drink. Pitt explained that this was because the group was always on the go and it was established that since Rusty was so busy that he rarely had time to sit down and eat, so he had to eat wherever he was, and it makes sense considering that they were trying to get so much done at all times. But there’s also another point to this that makes it kind of hard to swallow since when thinking about how many directors like to film several takes this would mean that Pitt would have had to consume the same food for every take. But when you see how many of the meals were small or only liquids it’s not that hard to imagine it working out like this. But it’s also fun to realize that by the end of the movie when he feels a bit of heartburn and tosses the rest of his burger away you get the feeling that it’s caught up to him just a bit.
In this great but very polite food fight you can see that the gag is that some of the food has been eaten and has obviously been set up to look that way since you can imagine each guy would be puking his guts out if he actually ate that much. The fruit arrangement alone would keep a person in the restroom for the next week or two if eaten all at once and alone. The hot dogs, the cake, the seafood, ugh. It’s all good on its own and in moderation, but for a prank it’s just golden since as you continue to see these food items roll out you also get the sense that the cost is continuing to mount and the kitchen staff are working their butts off to produce most of the dishes. Of course that’s the hidden part of the joke that we don’t get to see and therefore are supposed to not worry over since it’s not a part of the punchline. It works that way since if you think about all that hard work and effort going to waste then it gets a little depressing, especially if you’ve ever worked in the food industry. But then if you take it as the joke it is and don’t read anything else into it you should be able to have a good time with it.
Obviously Jimmy Fallon likes to have a good time with his fellow celebrities as Dan Clarendon from US could agree, and this kind of proves that since if this happened in real life you can surely bet that there would be a massive issue with the kitchen no matter who was doing the ordering. But for the sake of the joke and the laughs it gets this works on a great level since it’s just undeniably funny.
