Daniel Alvarez from Screenrant isn’t likely to be the only showing this fan-made trailer of Captain America 4, but the idea does bring up a lot of questions about what might have happened when Steve Rogers exited the present and made his way to the past near the end of the movie. Some people have even called this a massive plot hole since the whole idea of Steve going into the past and deciding to live with Peggy instead of coming back would have created a wildly divergent timeline that would have altered a great deal and changed up the MCU in a very big way. Of course there have been plenty of people ready and willing to debunk this since it didn’t take that long for a good number of sites to start hemming and hawing about the time travel sequences and start bringing up past movies with which to trump one another and use as a reference. Oh yes, it’s been fun thus far.
Mark Hughes of Forbes is one of those that argues against the plot holes by stating that the theory of time travel as it exists in the MCU was already given by the Hulk since he stated that there would be no disruption since once a person travels back to the past that past becomes THEIR future, meaning time will keep moving forward at its usual pace and the actions that a person has taken are now a part of their past and future at the same time. It gets wildly confusing the deeper we delve into it but it does make sense eventually. What Mark states is that one needs to pay attention to when Steve grabs the Pym particles, since the camera actually pans to this with a purpose as though to say ‘hey, eyes here’, though it’s likely that a lot of people were simply too distracted to pay much attention. But the particles that Steve had were a crafty plan, in Mark’s view and from a sensible standpoint, that allowed Steve to carry out the plan that he wasn’t about to tell to anyone else before putting it into motion. After all, he was given the Pym particles he needed to make the trips it would take to replace the stones and Thor’s hammer, but no one bothered to check and see if he had extras. Why would they? This is Captain America after all, a guy who just started swearing near the end of his run for crying out loud. His subterfuge skills have never been perfect but this time he pulled off a heist that wasn’t too impressive since no one knew about it, but it was meaningful all the same.
It’s fair to say that Cap was a bit selfish in this instance, and it’s even more fair to say that he had every right to be. The world wasn’t deprived of him for more than a short while if you really think about it since he jumped back in time and was still big and buff and, well, Captain America, and with Peggy Carter by his side it’s likely that he did some good while he was still young. But it does seem like Cap was due a bit of happiness after all he’d done for the world and could afford to be a little selfish, especially since he wasn’t the only hero kicking around during the war or anytime after. There have been heroes and villains in the Marvel universe for a long time now, and Captain America is just one among many. There were still plenty of heroes around during the time he traveled back to, just because they weren’t featured in the MCU didn’t mean they weren’t there.
Still, the MCU is going to be different without Captain America there, as it’s yet to be seen if the fans are really going to accept Falcon as the next Captain since despite being a great character, especially after being updated as he was in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Falcon is still kind of up in the air with his popularity since he’s only ever been heavily featured in a couple of movies, whereas Captain America has been one of the biggest draws of the MCU. And no offense to Anthony Mackie since he’s a great actor, but his character really doesn’t seem to be taking off in the biggest of ways when it comes to the story line. In fact some might say Rocket or Star Lord are a little more popular with a lot of people, and even they seem to be on their way out since the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie is said to be the last one. Captain America in the Marvel universe has become more of a title than a person at times, but without Chris Evans, the one and only Captain America, it’s going to seem kind of strange.
