When it comes to children’s characters, Bernd the Bread might just take the cake as the most depressing one out there. Not only does his appearance scream melancholy, but his backstory and interactions with other characters on the German children’s show KI.KA are downright miserable. Bernd’s best friends, if you can even call them that, are a stun sheep and an inventive bush. It makes you wonder what the German writers were thinking when they created this character. But then again, every country has its own unique approach to children’s entertainment, and Bernd the Bread is no exception.
Meet Bernd: The Pessimistic Loaf of Bread
Bernd’s favorite catchphrases include “I would like to be left alone” and “My life is hell.” It’s clear that this character is the epitome of negativity. Yet, despite his gloomy demeanor, Bernd is a popular character on KI.KA, a show designed and marketed for children. This raises the question of what other countries do for their own entertainment. In Japan, they have anime, while in the US, we have cartoons that, when you look at them, aren’t much better. So, it’s not fair to judge Bernd too harshly.
A talking, burned loaf of bread that’s constantly depressed and treats his only friends with little respect may seem like an odd role model or favorite character for children to get attached to. However, different countries have different values, which often result in unique characters that behave in various ways.
Is Bernd Really That Bad?
When you compare Bernd to other characters, such as those on Family Guy, he might not be the worst character out there. He’s probably less offensive than even the least offensive character on the US show. The real issue is that children love a character who is chronically depressed and finds no joy in anything. You would think they would prefer a more upbeat character that promotes positive development and upbringing.
But then again, many of us have grown up watching cartoons that were anything but nurturing and were geared towards delivering mindless entertainment. So, perhaps we shouldn’t be too quick to judge Bernd the Bread.
An Oddball Character with a Loyal Following
A burned loaf of bread that seems to hate the world and his place in it might not be the worst type of character, but he’s definitely an oddball. There must be more to Bernd than what meets the eye, as there has to be a reason why children like him so much. Otherwise, it’s hard to imagine that he would have remained on the show for this long.
Maybe there are a few redeeming qualities to Bernd that we’re not aware of. It would be nice to think so. After all, every character, no matter how depressing, has the potential to teach us something valuable about life and the world around us. So, let’s give Bernd the Bread the benefit of the doubt and appreciate him for the unique character that he is.
