They say first impressions are everything, and from this impression we get the feeling that David Harbour as Hellboy is going to kick some major tail. Let’s not forget that Ron Perlman brought the character to life not all that long ago and managed to at least put a good look on the big guy, but this version seems to be upgraded and even renovated in a way. He still has the classic horns that are ground down, he has the massive, red-skinned body, and of course he has the enormous, rock-like right hand that’s supposed to serve a well-defined purpose given that he’s an extra-dimensional being that’s meant to bring about the end of the world.
Just looking at the photo though this thing seems like it’s a lot harder and more durable than stone. His look thus far is pretty on par with the old Hellboy but the set of his jaw seems to indicate that he’s not going to be as up for the witty banter as the original. I could be wrong and this could be just an impressive mug shot in which he was told to look tough for the picture. In that case it worked, and he looks like he could chew up the average person without a care in the world.
Looking back though it’s important to note that Perlman’s Hellboy, while not as big or as bulky as this guy, was still the person that set the bar. The only thing that ruined that particular version was the fact that the producers wanted to do an ill-advised sequel that just basically killed the whole idea and sent fans fleeing to every corner of the cinematic universe. The Golden Army was a decent premise and had a plot that could have been well-developed, but it was handled so poorly that it simply flopped without any chance of redemption. Plus, Hellboy was talking about settling down with Liz at the end, which kind of ruined the idea of any more films being forthcoming.
The original Hellboy was much more comical in nature, this guy looks like he’s going to come out swinging and shooting without offering his constant witticisms and banter. In truth he looks more like a big red ape than Perlman ever did, but that’s because Perlman put a lot of humor into the role as well. Like I said though, that could all be a load of conjecture that won’t hold water once we see what this next film is going to be like.
Also, this version of Hellboy will be rated a firm R, meaning that it’s going to be a lot closer to the source material and will definitely not hold back any punches when it comes to blood, guts, gore, and very likely a lot of foul language that might just come from Hellboy himself. Hold onto to your crucifix, it’s about to get gritty.
