One of the most “viral” elements to the original Guardians of the Galaxy film was Baby Groot. An adorable specimen that achieved much fanfare, audiences loved the little guy. However, producers, merchandisers, you name it, failed to capitalize on this adorable creature. Sure we have Youtube videos of a dancing Baby Groot to look at but nothing physical came out. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 is not making the same mistake twice.
Marvel and Hasbro have teamed up to make a dancing Baby Groot toy which will debut later this month at the New York Toy fair. According to Entertainment Weekly the figure, clocking in at 11.5″ inches tall, lights up and dances along while blasting out Jay and The Americans’ “Come a Little Bit Closer,” but will also bop along to any music of your choice, if you play it near enough to him.
While this seems cute on the surface I’m having a tough time seeing this as a solid buy. Maybe it’s because I’m an adult and things like Teletubbies and Trolls scare the living daylights out of me? I mean this toy would literally haunt my dreams. Then again, I’m not 4 years old and do not see the magic in creepy plant faces that dance to music. For all I know this could be the next pet rock. At least that’s what Marvel and Hasbro are banking on here. What’s the worst that could happen? The products don’t sell, they develop their own personalities from AI that was accidentally installed, and take over the world like Chucky. Yup, it could happen.
