Eddie Murphy has set his sights on remaking the classic 1963 comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. For fans of Murphy’s comedic genius, this is thrilling news indeed.
Remaking A Beloved Comedy
The original film was known for its star-studded ensemble cast, including Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, and Ethel Merman. The movie depicted a wild chase for hidden fortune sparked by a dying man’s cryptic hint about a buried treasure.
Murphy recently shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, I got this other idea for something with Martin [Lawrence]. I’ve been developing it for years…I’m trying to do a remake of that movie.
This goal pairs him with longtime friend and comedic counterpart Martin Lawrence.
A Star-Studded Cast
The original It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World featured practically every big name in comedy at the time. Following in those footsteps, Murphy plans a similar strategy. He said, It’s gonna be a cast of all the who’s who of comedians. Anybody that was funny over the last 30 years is going to be in this movie.
Setting The Scene
The film’s plot kicks off during a massive California traffic jam caused by reckless driver Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante), who hints at treasure buried under the Big W before passing away. This launches a frantic race among an eclectic group of characters to find the loot.
The lineup included Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers and Jonathan Winters among many others. Similarly, Murphy intends to assemble contemporary comedy greats for his version.
Murphy’s Passion Project
Murphy noted how much he adores the original film: I remember when my mother took me to see the original…It’s such a great movie.
With Martin Lawrence on board and other comedy icons potentially joining, this remake promises to stay true to its predecessor’s chaotic charm.
A Winning Collaboration
This reunites Murphy and Lawrence who previously co-starred in films like Life, also allowing them to explore new comedic territories together. Murphy has hinted at their collaboration beyond films saying, We can switch it up by going back to doing stand-up.
The Script In Progress
Tony Award-winning playwright Jez Butterworth is penning the script. Known for his storytelling prowess, Butterworth is expected to craft hilarious yet intricate screenplay befitting its illustrious cast.
A Hopeful Future
If done right, Murphy’s remake could bring laughter-packed nostalgia to long-time fans while introducing this chaotic masterpiece to newer audiences. Stay tuned for updates as this exciting project unfolds!
