There’s a long-standing debate that Jesse Plemons and Matt Damon are celebrity doppelgängers. Recently, Jesse addressed these claims and shared his perspective on the matter.
Appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live
On Tuesday, Jesse appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss his new film Kinds of Kindness. During his visit, he participated in a skit where Guillermo, the host’s sidekick, mistook him for Matt Damon and locked him up.
When the interview began, Jimmy asked Jesse about his resemblance to the actor. Jesse admitted, It has somewhat been haunting me for a little while.
A Decade-Old Mistake
Jesse reminisced about an incident at the Toronto Film Festival about ten years ago. A woman asked him if he was Matt Damon. When Jesse denied it, the woman’s expression seemed to suggest she thought Matt Damon was lying. He explained, This woman asked me, ‘Are you Matt Damon?’ I said, ‘No, I’m sorry. I’m not.’ And she looked at me as if [she was thinking], ‘Wow, Matt Damon is a liar and an asshole.’ I felt bad.
Family Perspective
Reflecting further, Jesse mentioned a story about his aunt. After seeing the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, she told Jesse’s mother that Matt’s appearance in the film was what Jesse would look like when he got older. This comparison clearly marked its spot in Jessie’s journey.
The Role That Never Made It
The resemblance was so notable that Jesse even played John Grady Cole as a kid in the 2000 film All the Pretty Horses, where Matt portrayed the adult version of the character. However, all of Jesse’s scenes were ultimately cut from the movie.
I was supposed to be the very first scene of the movie. We sit down, and I’m not there, and I keep thinking, oh, well, you know [they] could have changed it in the edit. Sat through the whole thing, and I never showed up.
A Blossoming Career Despite Misidentification
Despite facing frequent comparisons to Matt Damon, Jesse’s career soared with his role on Friday Night Lights. His latest project, Kinds of Kindness, sees him playing diverse characters across three segments. His performance led to winning Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival this May.
