One of the most delightful things about the original movie Shrek is the incredible tribute it paid not only to Disney movies, but pop culture itself. While the movie told an excellent original tale, throughout the movie viewers got a constant look at references to past Disney movies and current events (at the time). What’s amazing in looking back is that the very first Shrek was extremely accurate when it came to such references. In fact, the scenes that they shot were nearly identical to the movies they were referencing. However, it’s in the second and third installments of Shrek where things took a turn.
Editor Bora Barroso put together a video that shows the movie references of the first two Shrek films side by side with the moments from the actual movies, and it’s pretty obvious that (despite a couple of small instances in the first film), things started to get out of hand in Shrek 2. Rather than go after Disney movies this is when producers decided to do a whole lot more pop culture referencing and I can honestly say that they didn’t do too great a job.
