Potential for Mare of Easttown Season 2 Grows as Discussions Continue

Fans of Mare of Easttown might have reason to celebrate again.

When HBO’s Kate Winslet-led drama Mare of Easttown concluded in 2021, many viewers hoped the so-called limited series would have more to offer. The show’s critical success was marked by acting Emmys for Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson. HBO’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys shared the network’s enthusiasm in a conversation with Variety, stating, [Creator] Brad [Ingelsby] and Kate and the producers are all talking to see if they think there’s a place to go. I think we’ll hear from them in a couple of weeks if they think that it’s a story worth telling, and they’re excited by. I’m excited to hear and see what they have to say.

Fast forward three years and the discussions are still alive. In a recent Variety cover story on Kate Winslet, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, revealed that conversations about a second season started right after the 2021 Emmys but felt premature at the time. She mentioned, Now, while there’s nothing in the works, we are having early discussions about whether it might be time to start thinking of building something. We might be willing to figure out with Mare, years later, picking her up—not on the heels of where she ended, but there have been years for the character that have passed. Who is she now?

Orsi further stated that she expects to speak with Winslet as well as Ingelsby and executive producer Mark Roybal about the feasibility of everyone coming back for a new season.

While Winslet has been non-committal about returning, she’s kept fans guessing. In a 2022 interview with the podcast Happy Sad Confused, she pondered whether to quit while ahead or pursue another season. When asked if she’d return as Mare, she simply replied, Probably, before urging listeners to Move on.

Julianne Nicholson also expressed her willingness to return as Lori Ross if there is a sequel. She told PEOPLE exclusively, It’s not impossible… You never know. She later reinforced her commitment with a straightforward 100%.

The creator Brad Ingelsby has not shied away from discussing his future projects either. Known for his knack for engaging storytelling and character development, Ingelsby hinted at potential new ventures post-Mare. He discussed working on stories he hopes will resonate with viewers.

The show unquestionably gathered immense popularity during its original run. The final episode was watched by 4 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max within its first 24 hours. This massive viewership cemented its standing among record-setting series like The Undoing and The Flight Attendant. Notably, Mare of Easttown‘s finale set a record as the most-watched episode of an original series on HBO Max in its initial availability period.

Evan Peters echoed this sentiment when he accepted his Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in Mare of Easttown. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in the show and thanked the audience passionately.
