The Weight by The Band had a lot of imagery inherent in it’s lyrics that was purposeful and meant to invoke emotions of the sort that would make it the classic that it now is. The song was released in 1968 and has been a mainstay in American culture ever since. One of The Band’s founders Robbie Robertson wrote the song after making his way to Memphis, Tennessee to get a feel for the music that would later on become the contributing sound to The Band’s customary sound. Eventually this song would find its way onto the top 500 of Rolling Stone’s Greatest Songs of All Time, where it deserved to be. It wasn’t a smash hit that put them on the map and it didn’t give them the kind of fame that they might have wanted, but it’s persisted as a favorite song throughout the years and been a very big part of a lot of different productions.
It’s just such an easy song to sing and get into.
5. American Gods
It’s an interesting premise for a show to bring the old gods to America and have them clash with the new gods. Of course I wouldn’t go around touting this to devout Christians as they would likely laugh and claim that there is only God and He would trounce them all. Belief is a funny thing though, and if it worked like it does in the show then all gods might be in a bit of trouble.
4. The Big Chill
When a group of friends that attended the same school learn that their mutual friend has committed suicide they come together for the funeral and begin to learn more about each other than they’d known in a while. It’s funny how a thing like a funeral can bring people closer together, yet the specter of the unknown tends to form and strengthen bonds that people had almost forgotten about.
3. My Name Is Earl
Earl Hickey doesn’t lead the idea life but he’s certainly trying. After learning about karma and just what it can do to those that don’t pay attention he makes a list of all the bad things he’s done and starts taking care of them one by one. His misadventures and revelations along the way lead him to become a better person as karma finally starts to steer his life in the right direction.
2. Easy Rider
You’d think that people could leave well enough alone. Two bikers that are out on their own just doing their own thing are making their way to New Orleans and then further on wherever the road might take them. During their trip they’re accosted once and flat out antagonized most of the rest of the time. Bikers might seem scary but unless they’re actively stomping your face in there’s usually nothing to worry about.
1. Woodstock
This was one of the grandest stages of all back in the day and anyone that got to play their songs on that particular stage were immortalized in a way that went beyond easy description. The mere fact that they were there means that they’d reached a level that a lot of bands only dream about.
