Blumhouse has confirmed that Doctor Sleep filmmaker, Mike Flanagan, is set to write, direct, and produce “a radical new take” on The Exorcist in a new project with Morgan Creek.
This comes in the wake of The Exorcist: Believer flailing at the box office, managing $65.5 million domestically in the US and Canada and $136.2 million worldwide. Despite these numbers, which initially seemed promising, performance fell short of sustainability, especially after NBCUni, Peacock, and Blumhouse acquired the rights from Morgan Creek back in July 2021.
David Gordon Green, who directed The Exorcist: Believer, has chosen to withdraw from further installments. He ignored the franchise’s past sequels for the movie. According to him, it was necessary to keep the storyline fresh.I love that ridiculous movie
, he reflected on his decision.
This new entry into The Exorcist universe stars demon-possessed characters and Jesuit priests. It will present an entirely new narrative separate from 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
Flanagan’s new project will reunite him with his frequent collaborator, Trevor Macy. Macy will produce on behalf of Intrepid Pictures. John Scherer also joins as part of the production team.
To date, Flanagan has teamed up with Blumhouse on three notable projects: Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). These movies showcased his knack for psychological horror, making this collaboration highly anticipated. Macy produced these films; the latter recently featured in Blumhouse’s Halfway to Halloween AMC Film Series.
A Return to Roots
The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker
, shared Flanagan about his drive for this project. Reuniting with his friends at Blumhouse adds excitement to this venture.
The anticipation is high among horror fans—as noted by Jason Blum’s enthusiasm: Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.
Morgan Creek Joins In
Morgan Creek Chairman, David Robinson expressed equal excitement: I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide…I could not be more excited to be working with him, Trevor, Jason and the entire Blumhouse Team.
Flanagan’s Horror Legacy
The Exorcist, widely considered one of horror’s seminal works, continues to hold sway over filmmakers and audiences alike. Speaking about his body of work, including Netflix hits like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, Flanagan’s involvement promises a project steeped in psychological terror.
Lining Up Expectations
Macy’s previous collaborations with Flanagan have been highly successful. Their combined expertise assures fans that this will be a reinvention worth watching.
Foreign Box Collection was highlighted at $45m worldwide and $17.8m internationally in its first three days.
