Jeremy Renner’s history with the Mission: Impossible franchise spans two films, 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. The actor recently opened up about his departure from the series during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
A Brief but Memorable Stint
Renner revealed that he was asked to reprise his role as IMF agent William Brandt in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. However, the offer was rather less appealing than he expected. The filmmakers intended him to work for a week only to kill off his character. Renner declined, stating, I remember they tried to bring me over (seas) for a week so they could kill my character, and I was like, No, you don’t get to do that. You’re not going to drag me over there and just kill my character, like get out of here!
Enjoying His Experience with the Cast
Despite this, Renner spoke fondly about his time on set. I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom [Cruise] so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then.
He emphasized the family-like bond he shared with the cast.
Pondering a Potential Return
The possibility of return remains on Renner’s radar. Referring to his daughter Ava, he mentioned, Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen. I’d always jump into a Mission: Impossible anytime and back into Brandt. It’s great.
Dismissing Replacement Rumors
Addressing rumors about him replacing Tom Cruise in the franchise, Renner cleared the air by saying, No, it was always Tom’s show, that would be a Tom decision, if he ever wanted to change that narrative.
The actor respects Cruise deeply and acknowledged his incredible work ethic: The guy’s a beast and works harder than anyone I know.
The Road Ahead
While fans might miss seeing William Brandt in action, Jeremy Renner isn’t closing any doors just yet concerning a return to the beloved series. For now, he remains fondly remembered for his impactful role in two major installments.
