A couple from Colorado stumbled upon a starving dog during their hiking trip in Montenegro and decided to adopt her, giving her a second chance at life. 
Shaylin and her husband recounted the touching tale in a TikTok video earlier this June under the username shaylingandhi. The video quickly went viral, resonating with many.
Life-Changing Encounter During Hike
The couple was on a three-day hike through Durmitor National Park, in Montenegro, when they encountered Cara, the dog who would soon become an inseparable part of their family. They noticed Cara emerging from the bushes, emaciated and frightened. Offering her leftover pizza turned out to be a gesture that marked the beginning of their unique bond.
She ate it right away and then immediately stopped being scared, in fact she followed us for the next 2 miles.
Shaylin remembers vividly.
The Long Journey Together
Cara’s journey with her newfound human friends was filled with challenges and heartwarming moments. Throughout their hike in the park, Cara stayed close, sleeping outside their tent each night. The couple soon realized that Cara had been trying to survive near a shepherd’s hut where she was often chased away.
The trio hiked approximately 25 miles over three days. The determination to save Cara was evident when they decided to lead her away from potential dangers.
Trek Across Borders
The adventure didn’t stop there. To take Cara home, they journeyed from Montenegro to Italy, stopping in Sarajevo for Cara’s vaccines and a “pet passport.” At home, as Shaylin recalls,At home, we spent some time living in our van…Cara went to Alaska with us and during this time she gained weight, going from 26 lbs. to 42 lbs.
Cara’s New Life in Colorado
Upon returning to Colorado, Cara thrived. She rapidly put on weight and enjoyed her role as ring-bearer at Shaylin’s wedding. 
Soon, the couple had twin daughters. Cara embraced her role as their gentle companion, enjoying almost six blissful years as their beloved pet.She has slowed down a lot now that she is 9 years old but she’s absolutely the gentlest and happiest dog we’ve ever met… She loves to lay with me on the couch and help me write…
A Beloved Companion
Today, Cara continues to bring joy to Shaylin’s household. Whether it’s cuddling on the couch while Shaylin writes or playing with the daughters, her presence is cherished daily.
