Strategic Timing

The network’s debut in October coincides with the start of preseason games for both the Bulls and Blackhawks. The White Sox will join CHSN in 2025 after finishing their season on NBC Sports Chicago. This staggered transition is intended to maintain fan engagement throughout various seasons.

A Broader Reach

Chicago Sports Network will be a joint venture between the teams and Nashville-based Standard Media. Former Stadium CEO Jason Coyle will be CEO with Chicago Sports Network, said Mario Tirabassi. The network aims to expand its Midwestern footprint through traditional cable providers, streaming services, and free over-the-air broadcast options.

NBC Sports Chicago Feels The Impact

The departure of these teams significantly reduces NBCUniversal’s regional sports network portfolio. Previously, they also lost the Cubs to Marquee Sports Network, which airs content for other local sports teams like the Bears and Sky.
We are excited to partner with Standard Media Group to create a brand-new outlet showcasing our region’s beloved sports teams, stated NBCUniversal’s Kevin Cross.

Broader Industry Trends

The formation of CHSN underscores a shift where sports teams opt to create their own networks for better content control and potential revenue. This trend demonstrates how regional sports networks are evolving in response to these needs.
Fans have expressed mixed emotions regarding the shift, with some lamenting leaving the familiar NBC Sports Chicago while others are intrigued by the promise of broader regional reach through CHSN.

Looking Forward

The creation of Chicago Sports Network is expected to set a new precedent in regional sports broadcasting. By managing their own media rights, the Blackhawks, Bulls, and White Sox aim to deliver more targeted and accessible content for their fans.
We’re excited to again bring live college sports to Marquee Sports Network throughout the fall, providing insight into how other networks might adjust in response.
