In one of the more promising pieces of development to come along in a while, Hulu has ordered Mid-Century Modern, a comedy pilot from Will & Grace duo Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and uber-producer Ryan Murphy.
Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer are set to star and executive produce the series that will also star Linda Lavin. Mutchnick and Kohan will write the pilot while James Burrows will direct. Executive producers include Mutchnick, Kohan, Burrows, Lane, Bomer, and Murphy. 20th Television is the studio behind the show.
The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper. As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.
Nathan Lane Steps In as Bunny Schneiderman
Lane will play Bunny Schneiderman while Bomer will be Jerry Frank. Lavin will take over as Bunny’s mother, Sybil Schneiderman.
A successful businessman with one foot in retirement, Bunny is forever in search of love but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it. Like her son, Sybil’s strengths are her weaknesses: wise, caring, and iconoclastic – which sometimes means she’s critical, smothering, and amoral.
Matt Bomer Takes on Jerry Frank
Jerry left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was homosexual. Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense of the term, Jerry is pure of heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head.
Lavin Completes The Trio
Lavin will portray Bunny’s mother, Sybil Schneiderman, bringing her signature flair to the role. Her character is described as wise yet critical, clearly adding another layer to this intricate family dynamic.
The Creative Titans Behind The Scene
Max Mutchnick and David Kohan are celebrated for their work on Will & Grace. They will once again team up with director James Burrows for this venture. The ensemble cast including Lane, Bomer, Lavin along with Mutchnick and Kohan’s writing promises a humorous yet touching exploration of friendship and ageing.
