Murder mysteries are plentiful on TV. There’s definitely not a shortage of dead bodies and investigators on the small screen, so why would we ever need another show? PBS Masterpiece has the answer, and it’s simple. With their latest show, Unforgotten, Masterpiece gives us a glimpse into a new formula for the classic murder mystery. It’s not entirely new; there are traces and also buckets of familiar things. Yet somehow, Unforgotten feels very fresh. It could be because of the characters, or it could be because of the stories. Old show, new country
Unforgotten has been around since 2015. It was released in the UK that year and has since had two three-episode series. So the show that we’re getting here in the US will actually start by running all those 6 episodes in the next 6 weeks. After that, a new mystery will begin–the mystery of the body in the basement.
Nicola Walker is perfect for the show
It isn’t only because she can portray the calm role of the lead investigator so perfectly. It’s also not just because Walker has a lot of previous work involving some type of mystery or another. This is because Walker has worked with Unforgotten’s writer Chris Lang twice before this show. They know each other well and have had plenty of practice in the past. That’s why Walker knows exactly how to portray her role perfectly.
DCI Cassie Stuart’s divorce is important
When you’re first introduced to Walker’s character DCI Cassie Stuart, you get a glimpse into her life as a recently divorced woman. This is important for you to pay attention to because as the show plays out, her marital situation will be an important context for a lot of things in the show. We’re sure we’ll find out more along the way.
Sunny and Stuart are awesome together
Not all partners work well together, but Sanjeev Bhaskar’s Sunny and Nicola Walker’s Stuart have been working together for five or 6 years before we see them working on their first case on screen. There’s this empathy between them that makes you want to watch them more. Sunny is basically Stuart’s sidekick, and she won’t be able to do her job properly if she didn’t have Sunny to watch her back at every turn.
Impossible cases are never impossible
The first case for the show seems like it’s an impossible task, but what Unforgotten tells us is that nothing is impossible when it comes to cracking cases. Some cases may seem like they’re dead end cases at first, but they all have some type of resolution in the end. Unforgotten is not a show about cold case files. Unforgotten is a full-fledged murder mystery that will get you hooked from beginning to end.
