The Simpsons Movie premiered on July 21 of 2007 in a town called Springfield that can be found in the state of Vermont, which had won a contest for the honor of hosting said event. Although people complained about the staleness of the TV show then as now, the movie was both a critical and a commercial success, as shown by its 88 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well as the more than $500 million brought in at the box office on a $75 million budget. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that people have been wondering about a potential sequel to The Simpsons Movie for some time, though now more than ever because it has been more than a decade since its release.
What Do We Know About The Simpsons Movie 2 So Far?
For those who are interested in a sequel to The Simpsons Movie 2, there is both good news and bad news. The good news is that there is interest from the director David Silverman as well as the producer Al Jean in doing a sequel to the movie. However, the bad news is that the sequel is still in the earliest stages of development, meaning that even if it is made, it won’t come out for some time to come.
There are a number of reasons that this is the case. For example, The Simpsons is still running in spite of the fact that it started being broadcast on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. As a result, the people who would be responsible for making a sequel to The Simpsons Movie are preoccupied with making the TV show, which is why making the first movie was so strenuous on them. Furthermore, it should be noted that the people who would be in charge of the sequel have stated that while they are interested in making a sequel, they won’t do so unless they believe that it will be great. Something that should come as bittersweet news to those who are interested in a sequel but also cautious about what they see as the decline of the TV show in its later seasons versus its excellent at its height.
With that said, it is interesting to note that The Simpsons Movie went through a long development of its own before it had its chance at the movie theatres. After all, the creator of the TV show Matt Groening’s initial intention was to do a movie once the TV show ended because that would enable him to do something that couldn’t be done on a TV budget and schedule, but that plan fell through because of his own success. Even once the people behind The Simpsons started in on the script, the writing was preceded by six months’ worth of discussion, which resulted in numerous ideas that were abandoned and in some cases, adapted for other purposes. For example, a suggestion for the Simpsons to rescue manatees became “The Bonfire of the Manatees,” while the concept of something similar to The Truman Show turned into the video game called The Simpsons Game. At one point, it was even suggested that Hank Scorpio make a return, but that fell through when Russ Cargill was created to take his place as the central antagonist.
Summed up, the sequel to The Simpsons Movie might still be in the earliest stages of development, but those who are interested should not give up hope. So long as the right plot comes along at the right time, it is not impossible for us to see the Simpsons make a triumphant return to the movie screen sometime in the future.
