The survival thriller follows five college friends who go scuba diving into a recently uncovered WWII shipwreck in the British Virgin Islands, where they find themselves trapped by great white sharks.
Here’s the full synopsis: Finding the long-lost wreck of the warship USS Charlotte has been the lifelong pursuit of Levi (Julian Sands), an aging expat running a tourist dive business in the British Virgin Islands together with recent college dropout Noah (Jack Parr). When the USS Charlotte emerges for the first time in eighty years after a tropical storm, Noah’s friends visiting the island insist for them all to do a once-in-a-lifetime dive on the newly discovered wreck before it’s handed over to the authorities. The dream dive rapidly turns into a nightmare as they become trapped in the darkness of the Charlotte’s interior, thirty meters down and with a dwindling air supply. And then they discover that they are not alone.
Director’s Underwater Expertise
This film is made by Swedish director Joachim Hedén, who has prior experience with underwater thrillers, having directed Breaking Surface in 2020. Hedén’s familiarity with aquatic scenes is evident as he previously directed an underwater sequence where Erin Mullen’s character is seen screaming, adding intensity to the film.
Star Cast Adds Depth
The Last Breath features Kim Spearman from As I Am and Erin Mullen, who plays a pivotal role involving terrifying underwater moments.
Mysterious Shipwreck and Its Haunting Past
The shipwreck USS Charlotte, briefly mentioned today as seen fleetingly like a strange dream before vanishing back into the deep, plays a crucial role. Against their will, Levi and his friends are brought back to this past event, mirroring themes explored by Sally Hepworth about whether past demons can ever truly be buried.

I would have preferred to be there and have the audience in the room. But this is the new normal now. Between cancelling the festival and moving it online, this is the better option.
With his extensive background in both underwater cinematography and dealing with challenging conditions, Hedén’s expertise shines through once more.
