The Acolyte recently introduced viewers to a new coven of Force-sensitive witches. There are intriguing parallels and mysteries to untangle as Osha’s (Amandla Stenberg) backstory adds layers, raising more questions than answers about the witches’ ultimate fate.
Star Wars has showcased witches before, such as the Nightsisters of Dathomir, who had extra-galactic ties in Ahsoka. One of the witches in The Acolyte, Mother Koril (Margarita Levieva), is Zabrak like Darth Maul and some of the Nightsisters. However, these witches appear to be an entirely separate group, living isolated and practicing their rituals on a far-off planet: Brendok. It’s unclear how they ended up on the isolated planet of Brendok or how they utilized the Force.
However, their peace was shattered after four Jedi arrived on the planet.
Mystery Deepens on Brendok
Before episode 3, it was explained that Osha’s twin, Mae, started a fire that supposedly killed her entire family except for Osha. It was believed Mae also perished, but Osha discovers her sister is alive when Mae begins hunting several Jedi Masters. This flashback episode explores events leading up to the blaze where darkness brews in their serene sanctuary.
The twins might have deep connections with dark magic as implied in one passage: Mother Koril and Mother Aniseya seemingly created Osha and Mae through the Force or dark magic.
The Blaze That Changed Everything
The Jedi eventually arrive demanding to see and test Osha and Mae despite their mother’s resistance. When Osha shows interest in joining the Jedi, things go awry. Desperate not to be separated from her twin, Mae starts a fire which envelops the coven. Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) narrowly saves Osha from death. As they flee, all witches including Mother Aniseya are seen lying dead.
A Suspicious Blaze
The fire’s rapid spread raises suspicion. Mae is seen igniting a book before chaos ensues without viewers seeing if she spread the flames. When Master Sol rescues Osha, they find witches dead far from any smoke inhalation or burn injuries.
The Fallout and Possible Culprits
Padawan Torbin (Dean-Charles Chapman) is seen with a fresh wound back on the ship while fleeing Brendok with Osha. This unexplained injury combined with his later Barash Vow hints at something darker the Jedi might be hiding.
Mysterious Figure Behind It All?
If not the Jedi or Mae themselves, possible culprits include other witches or Mae’s mysterious Sith master whose sinister silhouette lit by a red lightsaber speaks volumes about their role.
