Shannon Sharpe solidifies his relationship with ESPN. The three-time Super Bowl winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer has signed a multi-year deal with the network. This arrangement will see Sharpe play an expanded role on First Take, the popular morning discussion program alongside Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim.
“Shannon Sharpe has been an incredible addition to the First Take team, enhancing the show’s dynamic with his engaging presence and insightful commentary,” said David Roberts, ESPN’s Head of Event & Studio Production. “Shannon’s chemistry with Stephen A. Smith has elevated our debates and been another key reason First Take is the premier destination for morning sports discussion.”
Thanks in part to Sharpe’s contributions, First Take just achieved its most-viewed May ever and its 22nd straight month of year-over-year growth. Shannon Sharpe, who started working at First Take in August 2023, will also contribute more to other ESPN shows that will be revealed later.
Said Sharpe in a statement, Being a part of this family has been a blessing. Everything about this relationship with ESPN, Stephen A., and First Take, has been tremendous. I look forward to expanding my role and showing more of the world what I have to offer. The show goes on!
This news was shared by Sharpe, Molly Qerim, and Stephen A. Smith to kick off this morning’s First Take. Stephen A. Smith remarked that he appreciated Shannon’s presence, noting how critical his involvement had become for the show’s success.
Stephen A., I know this moment is not possible without you. As you mentioned to me earlier, you have bosses, but you extended the olive branch and let them know that you wanted me to be a part of this family.
Sharpe expressed his gratitude during the announcement.
The deal is rumored to last four years, while Stephen A. Smith’s contract expires in July 2025. During a previous episode of First Take, he suggested that it might be possible for Sharpe to take over his role eventually.
Apart from his commitment to ESPN, Shannon Sharpe hosts two podcasts: Club Shay Shay and Nightcap.No more waiting until morning. ‘Nightcap’ is the new live sports talk destination with Shannon Sharpe.
The Hall-of-Famer’s varied digital platform makes it unlikely that he will limit himself solely to ESPN duties long-term.
