Ryan Gosling Asks Stephen Colbert His Toughest Lord of the Rings Question Yet on The Late Show

Stephen Colbert

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night to promote their new film The Nice Guys, which hits theaters next Friday, May 20. However, the most interesting conversation wasn’t about their movie but about another set of films and the books they are based on: Lord of the Rings.

Anyone and everyone who has ever watched Stephen Colbert before knows how big of a Lord of the Rings nerd he is. In fact, he ever went on set during the filming of the Hobbit films to talk canon with Peter Jackson and got to have a brief cameo in The Desolation of Smaug. Despite the numerous people that have tried to stump Colbert with Lord of the Rings questions in the past, no one has been successful, but last night, Ryan Gosling believed that he and his mom had come up with a question so tough that not even Colbert would be able to answer it.

As Gosling explained, his mom didn’t use to be a huge fan of Colbert until he defeated James Franco in their Tolkien-off. After that, she gained a new respect for Colbert and became even more invested in Lord of the Rings, and that’s how she came up with such an incredibly difficult question for the Late Show host.

To find out what the question was and to see if Stephen Colbert was able to answer it correctly, check out the video below:
