The Terminator saga, traditionally centered on Sarah Connor and her son, John, is about to take a fresh turn. Netflix has partnered with Skydance and Japanese animation studio Production I.G., along with The Batman II writer Mattson Tomlin, to create Terminator Zero. This collaboration promises to rejuvenate the franchise by introducing new characters and narrative arcs.
Diverse Cast Headlines a New Chapter
Rosario Dawson, known for her role as Ahsoka Tano in various Disney+ Star Wars shows, will voice Kokoro, an advanced AI designed to rival Skynet. The character questions whether humanity is a plague or worth saving. As production continues under Mattson Tomlin, fans are eagerly awaiting Dawson’s portrayal of this pivotal character.
Timothy Olyphant, renowned for his performances in Deadwood and Justified, will lend his voice to the nameless Terminator. Speculations are rife about the model he represents, but first-look images suggest a familiar T-800 model. This new Terminator is expected to be wholly its own thing,
hints Tomlin.
A Fresh Narrative Approach
The series, featuring eight episodes, is set in two eras: 1997 and 2022 post-Judgment Day. It introduces Sonoya Mizuno as Eiko, a resistance fighter journeying from a war-torn 2022 back to the ’90s to prevent Armageddon. Mizuno’s mission revolves around stopping Malcolm Lee, voiced by André Holland of Moonlight fame. Lee’s character is a genius programmer haunted by apocalyptic dreams.
Focus on Strong Creative Partnerships
Terminator Zero sees Mattson Tomlin at the helm as showrunner. Masashi Kudo of Bleach fame undertakes directing duties. The partnership between Skydance and Production I.G. promises high-quality animation which will be pivotal for the series’ success.
Aiming for a Bold Reboot
This ambitious anime project will debut on Netflix on August 29, 2024 and aims to distance itself from rehashing old plots involving the Connors. Instead, it seeks to infuse new life into the franchise by addressing contemporary themes and questions about AI and humanity’s future.
