Netflix Animation held an exciting slate preview event on June 6 at the Tudum in L.A., setting the stage for the Annecy Animation Festival from June 9-15. Among the highlights were teasers for upcoming works in 2024 and 2025, with notable premieres such as Shannon Tindle’s Ultraman: Rising on June 14.
Aardman’s Wallace & Gromit Return
The biggest announcement was the full title of Aardman’s next stop-motion feature, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Directed by franchise creator Nick Park and creative director Merlin Crossingham, this film sees the return of Feathers McGraw from the Oscar-winning short The Wrong Trousers. The film involves an out-of-control “smart gnome” and promises some nostalgic excitement for fans.
The iconic British duo’s creator, Nick Park, shared, ‘The Wrong Trousers is probably the film I look to as the model… There’s strength in the simplicity of ideas.’
Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods
The standout presentation was an exclusive teaser for Zack Snyder’s highly-anticipated 2D-animated adult series, Twilight of the Gods, streaming in fall 2024. This violent and gory action-adventure is set against Norse mythology and features a dramatic love story between Sigrid and Leif. Snyder described it as a series that goes from icy cold to emotional, and her vengeance really tests their love.
Sylvia Hoeks will voice Sigrid, Pilou Asbæk as Thor, John Noble as Odin, and Paterson Joseph as Loki. Snyder revealed that they initially considered 3D animation but found that ‘The aesthetic is much better in 2D.’
Arcane Season 2 Elevates the Drama
A highly anticipated sneak peek was Season 2 of the Emmy-winning series Arcane: League of Legends, set to release in November 2024. Returning voice actors include Ella Purnell as Jinx and Hailee Steinfeld as Vi.
Purnell expressed her excitement, saying, ‘Oh man, I’m trying to remember [season one] because it was over two years ago… I actually just went back into the studio to complete some ADR for the Season 2 finale – and I cried.’
Exclusive Preview of Ultraman: Rising
Shannon Tindle’s Ultraman: Rising is set to premiere on June 14, marking Netflix’s continuing investment in high-quality animation. Actor Christopher Sean voices Ken Sato, a superhero who deals with becoming a surrogate parent to a giant kaiju.
Diverse New Films On The Horizon
The event also introduced several upcoming animated features including the Oscar hopeful That Christmas, Skydance Animation’s musical comedy Spellbound, and Phil Johnston-directed Roald Dahl adaptation The Twits. Other films like Pookoo, K-Pop: Demon Hunters, and Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie diversify Netflix’s catalogue further.
