Just a day after the first teaser trailer for Moana 2 (2024) was released, the film has set a remarkable record. The sequel to the beloved 2016 hit has achieved the milestone of becoming the most-watched animated trailer within 24 hours, marking an incredible accomplishment for Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Initially conceived as an animated Disney+ series, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced earlier this year that Moana 2 would be a full-fledged film, slated to hit theaters later this year.
The news included that Johnson will also reprise his role as Maui in the animated sequel
. This announcement came not long after it was revealed that he would play Maui in a live-action adaptation too.
The sequel is directed by David Derrick Jr., who is working on creating an epic journey
, alongside Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, with Christina Chen and Yvett Merino producing.
Moana 2 reunites Disney princess Moana, voiced again by Auli’i Cravalho, and her friend Maui, three years later for an expansive new voyage.
This voyage will also see new seafarers joining their crew. As Disney explains, After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
