Author Quinn is supportive of these changes. She said around the premiere of season 2, I am very hands off with regards to the Netflix show. My attitude is that the people at Shondaland are incredibly smart and they know what they’re doing and I’m gonna let them work their magic. Further, showrunner Jess Brownell revealed to Teen Vogue, deciding to tell a queer story with Francesca, I spoke with Julia Quinn, I got her blessing.

In response to a fan’s question about whether Netflix will keep couples as they are in the books, Quinn noted in a viral Facebook comment screenshot, I have seen many online rumors that it is in my contract that they must keep the book couples. I’m not sure where this came from, as I have never said anything to that effect. That said, I am confident that Shondaland is going to do an amazing job!

Prior to the season three release, Quinn expressed her support for a future queer lead in Bridgerton. She mentioned to Cosmo Spain how well the series mimics romance novel emotions and emphasized inclusivity: One of the things the series has done amazingly well is to perfectly mimic the kind of emotions you feel when you read a romance novel…because they show a world in which anyone has the right to be happy. Being more inclusive, casting without racial prejudice, all of that contributes to that feeling.

She further added her gratitude towards Shondaland, stating, I am grateful to the Shondaland team for showing me what I could do with my books…Imagining a gay protagonist in Bridgerton seems like a good idea to me because the goal of the saga has always been to show that all people deserve a happy ending.
