What We Learned from Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” Trailer

The trailer for Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs has been released and we love it. Wes Anderson is known as an unconventional film maker. His movies such as the Grand Budapest Hotel have an inimitable and highly distinctive visual and narrative style and his approach to movie making is considered to be unique in Hollywood. The trailer for his latest feature film Isle of Dogs looks to be unconventional, even by the Wes Anderson’s standard. Here’s what we know so far and what we learned from the trailer.

Isle of Dogs is an animated movie

Fans of the 2009 Fantastic Mr Fox, based on a book by Roald Dahl, will be excited to see Anderson return to the animated genre. Like Fantastic Mr Fox, Isle of Dogs is a stop-motion animated film. The technique captures objects frame by frame as they are moved and then plays the images rapidly to create the illusion of movement. The technique yields a jagged quality and a quirky quality which is so characteristic of Anderson’s style. Isle of Dogs looks idiosyncratic and epic and we can’t wait to see it on the big screen. It looks positively refreshing and delightful with the usual Wes Anderson sense of humor evident all the way through the trailer.

What is Isle of Dogs about?

The trailer for Isle of Dogs portrays a science fiction Japanese dystopian future where puppies are exiled to an island built on garbage because of canine overpopulation and the spread of doggy flu. The scene is set by the trailer narrator, Courtney B. Vance, who paints the dismal imaginary setting of near future Japan which looks menacing and bleak. “Canine saturation has reached epidemic proportions,” we learn from the trailer and see our for legged friends caged and banished.

The animated feature film recounts a familiar tale of a young boy who is on a mission. It is a tale as old as Lassie, however from the look of the trailer. we are reassured that it will be recounted in typically eccentric Andersonesque style. Our protagonist, Atari Kobayashi sets out to desperately try to find his lost pooch on Trash Island. He flies a stolen plane to the island and, once there, he enlists the support of five other banished hounds on his quest to find his beloved dog, Spots. Meanwhile his adventures are witnessed from afar by girl who “may be in love”. Clearly, escapade and exploits ensue and we’re already rooting for Atari.

Who will star in The Isle of Dogs?

The trailer boasts a stellar voice cast. The all-star cast will include the voices of a number actors that will be very familiar to fans of Anderson’s other movies. The director has collaborated with some of them on previous fan favored movies, including Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and Jeff Goldblum. The cast also includes Frances Mc Dormand, Bryan Cranston (of Breaking Bad fame) and the lovely Scarlett Johansson. Anderson is known for assembling a motley and whimsical cast and Isle of Dogs is not going to break with this trend. It even features the voice talents of Yoko Ono.

When is the release date?

Fans will have to exercise patience until March 2018 before they can catch Isle of Dogs in movie theatres nationwide. What we learned from the trailer is we can hardly wait.
