Amazon MGM Studios has just announced the release date for their highly anticipated live-action comedy, Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie, directed by animation veteran Kyle Balda (Minions: The Rise of Gru). The film will hit theaters worldwide on February 20, 2026.
The film stars Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) as George Hardy, a devoted shepherd who loves his sheep and raises them solely for their wool. He reads murder mystery novels to them every night, not knowing that his flock actually understands him and debates the mysteries amongst themselves.
Tragedy strikes when George is found dead under suspicious circumstances. Adding a twist to the narrative, the sheep decide to take matters into their own hooves and solve the crime, putting their investigative skills to the test. This plot element was highlighted in a statement that read: The local cop Tim Derry (Braun), on the other hand, has never solved a serious crime in his life, so the sheep conclude they will have to solve it themselves.

The ensemble cast includes notable names such as Emma Thompson (Matilda the Musical), Nicholas Braun (Succession), Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You), Molly Gordon (Theater Camp), Hong Chau (The Whale), Tosin Cole (Supacell), and Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones).
Adaptation of a Bestseller
Three Bags Full is adapted from Leonie Swann’s international bestseller of the same name. Published in Germany in 2005 under the title Glennkill, the novel quickly became a hit, topping best-seller lists and earning Swann prestigious accolades like the Glauser Prize for crime fiction.
A New Genre for Kyle Balda
The film marks Kyle Balda’s first foray into live-action after making his name with animated hits such as Minions: The Rise of Gru and Despicable Me 3. Speaking about the challenges of this new venture, Balda mentioned: Right from the beginning, the process was very different than what we were used to…there was/is a world, characters, rules and plot-points that just need(ed) to happen.
