Bad Boys: Ride or Die star Dennis McDonald has recently opened up about a surprising twist – his character’s pivotal scene wasn’t part of the original script.
Dennis McDonald’s Unplanned Moment
McDonald, who reprises his role as Reggie from Bad Boys II, unfolded an unexpected yet significant presence in the film. Interestingly, the big final scene showcasing Reggie’s heroics came as a last-minute addition.
Reggie’s character has evolved significantly since his earlier appearance when he faced Mike (Will Smith) and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) for taking Marcus’ daughter on a date. This evolution now sees him saving his in-laws from grave danger, marking a significant elevation of his character arc.
The Game-Changing Scene
This is a blessing,
McDonald expressed to Entertainment Weekly. When I got the script and found out what I was doing, I already knew that this might be something real, real big. He’s finally in the family, [Marcus and Mike] finally accepted him, he’s finally getting his due, so I’m just happy about that.
In Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Reggie becomes integral to the plot by heroically saving Marcus’ wife, daughter, and grandson from attackers infiltrating their home. This particular action is observed by Mike and Marcus through video feeds, heightening the scene’s emotional weight and recognition of Reggie’s valor.
An Unexpected Honor
According to McDonald, the final scene where Reggie receives recognition from Mike and Marcus wasn’t planned initially. He shared his astonishment over receiving a call to shoot additional scenes back in Miami post-wrap:
They just told me they wanted me back, so I’m thinking I had to do something over [again]. But I had lines and everything, and it was the whole end of the movie. They’re like, ‘Yeah, you end the whole movie. It ends with your face.’ And I’m like, ‘Are you serious?’ I was just overwhelmed.
A Heartwarming Conclusion
The concluding sequence caps off with Mike and Marcus arguing over grill duties at a barbecue before happily handing them over to Reggie, symbolizing his full acceptance into their circle. This gesture completes a narrative arc that emphasizes camaraderie and respect.
I was just overwhelmed
, McDonald reiterated while reflecting on how special this moment was for him personally and professionally.
