“Deadliest Catch” star Nick Mavar has tragically passed away at the age of 59. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Police Chief Elbie of the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department in Alaska confirmed, The passing of Nick Mavar Jr. On June 13th 2024.
The Bristol Bay police department received a call for a medical emergency at a boatyard in Naknek, following which medics transported him to the Cama’i Community Health Center where they attempted life-saving measures.
Mavar was later pronounced dead, with next of kin notified immediately thereafter. The police department highlighted their ongoing efforts to speak with witnesses present at the scene in Naknek.
Star Deckhand From 2005 to 2021
Mavar was a familiar face on “Deadliest Catch,” appearing in 98 episodes from 2005 to 2021. Working as a deckhand with Captain Sig Hansen on the F/V Northwestern, Mavar left an indelible mark on the series and its spin-offs such as “Deadliest Catch: Legends Born & Broken.”
In his final years on the show, a significant health scare led to his departure. After suffering a ruptured appendix during filming, it was discovered that he had a cancerous tumor. This event was chronicled in one of his last episodes.
A Lawsuit Over Healthcare
Mavar’s departure also involved controversy. According to reports, he sued Sig Hansen and the owners of F/V Northwestern, alleging inadequate healthcare planning during the coronavirus pandemic period. Mavar’s complaint claimed that delays in proper examination and diagnosis contributed to his medical issues.
A Mentor and an Uncle
Nick was not just a deckhand but also the uncle of Captain Jake Anderson. On Deadliest Catch, Nick played a pivotal role in assisting his nephew through substance addiction challenges. Jake publicly acknowledged this support on multiple occasions. In 2021, he shared an emotional tribute:
I love you uncle Nick. You are the embodiment of fisherman. Thank you for pulling me out of the mire so many years ago.
