A young black bear recently emerged in Grand Lake, bringing both curiosity and caution to the community. The bear, spotted indulging in bird seed and peering into windows, has fascinated residents, leading many to share their sightings on social media. Images of this bear have circulated widely, captivating locals and strangers alike.
Unexpected Visitor
The playful bear has made appearances in several areas south of Honey Creek Bridge, including Zena, Buffalo Shores South, and Basswood Estate. Zena resident Cindi Dyer humorously remarked, There have been bear sightings near the Zena Baptist Church. I guess he is Baptist.
Close Encounters
Connie and Danny King, alongside their neighbors Sandy and Bryan Scott, witnessed the bear’s antics firsthand. Connie described the scene: He was adorable
. The mischievous bear helped itself to sunflower seeds and even peeked through a window at the King’s workshop.
Advisory from Authorities
The local game warden advised residents to remove bird and deer feeders for a few days to encourage the bear’s return to the woods. Connie King shared this advice and noted that the warden reassured residents that the bear wasn’t a threat unless cornered.
Personal Experiences
Sandy Scott recounted her experience with the bear: My neighbor, Chaise Burleson, called and said, ‘Hey the bear is in your front yard’
. Sandy rushed to a window and saw the bear only eight feet away. She detailed its appearance: His symmetrical white markings are so unique on the chest, and I got a good view of his cute little cubby paws.
Troubles with Feeders
Sandy also identified the bear as the likely culprit behind emptied feeders and a tipped birdbath. We have been blaming the squirrels and deer,
she humorously confessed.
Further Precautions
The Grand Lake Police Chief Mark Morris advised residents against engaging with the bear. Morris emphasized: It is important not to approach the bear and try to pet the animal.
