21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street star Channing Tatum still wants to make a third film in the franchise, and he said co-star Jonah Hill does too. During an interview with Comic Book, Tatum revealed that the movie—which has existed in some form for years—was hindered by a lot of bureaucracy but mentioned it’s still the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie.

Tatum and Hill Eager for Return

Tatum expressed his enthusiasm, saying, I would love to do it with Jonah, and Jonah, I know, wants to do it. It’s just a lot of bureaucracy, kind of above the line stuff. It’s really hard to get it made and we’ve been trying to get it done.

The Script’s Long Journey

A third movie was officially put in development by Sony Pictures back in September 2014 with 22 Jump Street scribe Rodney Rothman commissioned to write the script. Soon after, during the notorious Sony hack, it was revealed that 23 Jump Street was intended as a crossover with the iconic Men in Black franchise.

A Change of Plans

This ambitious crossover idea caused substantial delays. Despite the initial excitement, elements like combining two distinct universes provided complex challenges. Nevertheless, Tatum’s admiration for writer Rodney Rothman remains significant, as he once mentioned, I love Rodney, dude, I’ll do anything with him.

A Promising Yet Unmade Concept

While both actors are enthusiastic about returning, over a decade has passed since 22 Jump Street‘s release. Reflecting on this period, Tatum highlighted, You know what, I’m going to put some good juju out there and I’m going to say I would love to see 23 Jump Street. I would love to do it with Jonah…

The Never-Ending Fun of Jump Street Films

The pair previously portrayed officers infiltrating high school and college settings in different movies. The sequel contained numerous meta jokes about potential follow-ups, even showing them undercover in varied roles like ballet students and medical students. As Jonah Hill noted, This certainly is the funniest thing we’ve ever gotten to develop.

The Curious Case of Men in Black Crossover

Touted initially as part of a Men in Black crossover project unveiled during CinemaCon 2016 by Sony, details revealed that Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill would reprise their roles while stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones wouldn’t return. This crossover plan’s intricacies further added hurdles to the movie’s timely production.
