Bill Cobbs, the prolific character actor whose career spanned over five decades, has passed away at the age of 90. Cobbs died on Tuesday at his home in the Inland Empire, California, as confirmed by his publicist, Chuck I. Jones.
A Career Spanning Decades
Starting with his debut in the 1974 crime drama The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Cobbs went on to amass nearly 200 movie and TV show credits. Reflecting humorously on his debut role, Cobbs once said, I came back home to see my mom and dad, and all our friends and neighbors went to see the movie, and everyone was waiting for my appearance — I walk up to a policeman in the subway and say, ‘Hey, man. What’s goin’ on?’
Film Roles that Captivated Many
Cobbs’ impressive filmography includes roles such as Louisiana Slim in The Hitter (1979), Walter in The Brother from Another Planet (1984), Orvis in The Color of Money (1986), Devaney in The Bodyguard (1992), Arthur Chaney in Air Bud (1997), Reginald in Night at the Museum (2006), and Master Tinker in Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).

His work wasn’t limited to acting; he also won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Performance in a Daytime Program for his role in the children’s show Dino Dana.
A Life Rich with Experiences
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Cobbs served eight years in the Air Force before entering civilian life where he worked at IBM and sold cars. It wasn’t until later that he pursued acting, moving to New York to fulfill his dream.
A Family Mourns
Cobbs had recently reached his milestone 90th birthday on June 16th. His brother Thomas expressed gratitude for the time they had together during his final days, remarking, As a family we are comforted knowing Bill has found peace and eternal rest with his Heavenly Father. We ask for your prayers and encouragement during this time.
