After an exceptional career spanning nearly six decades, meteorologist Jym Ganahl has decided to hang up his weather gear. Known affectionately as a ‘family member’ by those he served, Ganahl’s story is both inspiring and testament to his dedication.
A Meteorological Journey Unlike Any Other
Jym Ganahl’s fascination with weather started when he was just 12 years old. He shared,When I was 12, I was mad at the guys on T.V. for missing snow forecasts for missing school, and I wanted to get out of school, So, when I was 12 I started studying weather.
This early passion led him to study speech, math, and climatology at UNI. By the age of 17, Ganahl had already given his very first weather forecast on Waterloo’s news station in 1966.
From Youngest Broadcaster to Long-term Staple
At the young age of 17, Ganahl gave his very first weather forecast on the Waterloo news station in 1966.
A significant milestone came from this as Ganahl was recognized as the youngest broadcast meteorologist in the country.
His career took him from Iowa to Columbus, where he established himself at Channel 4 for over 30 years.
A Unique Passion for Snow Forecasting
Ganahl carved a niche for himself by focusing on snow forecasting. Unlike meteorologists who might chase severe storms, for Ganahl,snow is his thing.
The Community Connection
Ganahl wasn’t just a meteorologist; he became deeply embedded in the community. Referring to the public’s response, he mentioned,They always say ‘we apologize for coming up to you in public,’ but no! That’s the only thing I know. I love it. I feel like I’m a family member to everybody around here.
