The Michigan Lottery mentioned that the winning ticket was purchased at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc, in Grand Blanc, Mich., a Flint suburb. The ticket winner has not stepped forward yet, lottery officials said.
GRAND BLANC TWP., Mich. (WNEM) – After much anticipation, the Michigan Lottery finally announced the winner of the $842.4 million Powerball jackpot from a drawing held on January 1.
Jackpot Winners Remain Anonymous
The winners, known as the Breakfast Club, have chosen to remain anonymous. Comprising a married couple and their attorney, they are from mid-Michigan.
The winning ticket matched all numbers drawn on Jan. 1: 12-21-42-44-49, and Powerball number 01.
Drew Svitko, Powerball’s product group chair, noted:The hundreds of good causes supported by U.S. lotteries that will receive further funding from this jackpot run.
An Exciting Moment for Food Castle
Nabil Nannoshi, owner of the Food Castle where the winning ticket was purchased, shared his excitement:It was very exciting for us, employees, everyone around here. Customers were all excited that it happened in this area.
The Food Castle received a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Nannoshi plans to donate part of this bonus to local charities and food pantries.
A Careful Approach by Winners
The winners have opted for a lump sum payment of $305 million after taxes. Attorney Mike Harder explained: Like many middle-class folks, they have some debt and would like to pay that off. They’d very much like to buy a second home in Florida. They want to help their immediate family out and fulfill some opportunities and dreams.
Understanding the magnitude of their new wealth, Harder added: We’ve chosen to take a more deliberate path and ensure we have the right team of advisors in place to help us decide the best way to move forward.
A Landmark Win for Michigan
This win marks the largest Powerball prize ever won in Michigan and is the second-largest lottery win in state history after a $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in January 2021.
