The 2024 Tribeca Festival saw Nicholas Colia’s Griffin in Summer dominate the narrative features category, securing awards for Best U.S. Film and Best Screenplay, along with a special jury mention for New Narrative Director.
Colia’s debut feature stars Everett Blunck as an ambitious 14-year-old playwright who becomes enamored with his mother’s handyman, portrayed by Owen Teague. The jury noted the film’s balance between heartwarming and tragic elements, calling it both relatable and nuanced.
Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux received Best Performance in a U.S. Narrative Feature for her role in Jazzy, directed by Morrisa Maltz, which serves as a follow-up to the acclaimed The Unknown Country (2023) starring Lily Gladstone.
The international highlight was Bikechess, a dark comedy from Kazakhstan by Assel Aushakimova, which won Best International Narrative Feature. Saltanat Nauruz shines as Dina, a disillusioned broadcast journalist wrestling with the propaganda she reports.
Nnamdi Asomugha’s The Knife earned accolades for Best Cinematography in a U.S. Narrative Feature, handled by Alejandro Mejia. Asomugha also took home the award for Best New Narrative Director.
Cara Cusumano, Tribeca Festival director and SVP Programming, exclaimed, I do not envy our jurors’ task of selecting this year’s winners,
acknowledging the diverse and high-caliber entries that epitomize the festival’s spirit.
