The Most Disappointing Films of 2024

The year 2024 has seen its fair share of cinematic letdowns, with several high-profile releases failing to meet audience and critical expectations. Despite boasting star-studded casts and promising premises, these films have struggled to captivate and deliver on their potential. From epic sci-fi sequels to ambitious socio-political commentaries, the disappointment has been palpable as these anticipated movies have faltered, leaving viewers yearning for more substance and cohesion.

As audiences eagerly awaited standout performances and gripping storylines, films like Dune 2 and The Fall Guy fell flat, unable to live up to their predecessors or the hype surrounding them. Here’s a closer look at some of the most notable cinematic catastrophes of 2024.

Dune 2 Offers Dull Spectacle

Even with the pedigree behind it, Dune 2 couldn’t escape disappointment. The much-anticipated sequel saw Austin Butler taking a daring turn by going sans eyebrows. As Butler shared:

It was so liberating not having eyebrows. You don’t realise how much they weigh you down. I was just streamlined.

And while that might be a fun fact, it didn’t save the film’s bloated storyline and lackluster pace. Not even Timothée Chalamet riding a sandworm could resurrect the faltering epic.

The Fall Guy Fails to Deliver

Set against the Australian backdrop, this movie stars Ryan Gosling as a dim but lovable stuntman-detective. Unfortunately, The Fall Guy crashes much like its namesake. Despite standout moments from Emily Blunt, whose comedic talents are undeniable here, the film ultimately felt disjointed and derivative of far better action-comedies.

Challengers Falls Flat

Luca Guadagnino‘s Challengers aimed high but landed low. Despite featuring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, the film’s take on tennis as a metaphor for Queer desire felt forced rather than enlightening. Though it boasted stellar cinematography, the shallow narrative failed to engage.

Civil War Overly Ambitious

Alex Garland’s Civil War had all the makings of an insightful commentary on American socio-political issues. However, it buckled under its own ambitions with convoluted storytelling and excessive subplots. Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura tried to hold it together, but their efforts couldn’t save this bloated odyssey.

I Saw The TV Glow Lacks Depth

A24’s I Saw The TV Glow promised an intriguing coming-of-age tale from trans filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun but fell short in execution. While the representation is noteworthy, the film’s narrative didn’t resonate beyond its niche audience.

Hit Man Shoots Blanks

This Netflix release featuring Glen Powell as a teacher-turned-hitman felt more like an exercise in missed opportunities than a thrilling adventure. Despite potential for charm and intrigue, uninspired direction left Hit Man forgettable.
