The showrunner and cast of Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters recently revealed teasers about Kong’s role in the much-anticipated Season 2.
While the first season was heavily anchored by the presence of Godzilla, the concluding episode dimly indicated the impending arrival of another kaiju icon. After rescuing Keiko, displaced in time, the characters find themselves on Skull Island. The scene crescendos with an alarm blaring and the audience catches a glimpse of Kong through the foliage. However, this has sparked concern among fans who fear that Kong might overshadow Godzilla next season.
The cast and filmmakers opened up to The Direct’s Russ Milheim during an FYC (For Your Consideration) event regarding Kong’s potential arc in Season 2. Addressing the widespread worries about Kong potentially stealing Godzilla’s thunder, showrunner Chris Black attempted to provide some perspective:
In the MonsterVerse, there is a pantheon of great iconic characters. I mean, Godzilla, obviously, first and foremost, but there’s Kong, Rodan Mothra, Ghidorah… We want – if we have the opportunity – to surface the whole pantheon.
Black also hinted: I think the fact that you get to the climax of the season finale and a new character steps onto the stage implies we have plans for that character.
Anna Sawai, who portrays Cate Randa, shared her thoughts on how her character might connect with Kong despite her trauma with Godzilla:
That’s a difficult question to answer because I feel like she also made a connection with Godzilla. There’s more to Cate than being traumatized by G-Day. So I hope she finds a connection with Kong as well.
Sawai also expressed her personal affection for animals: If I met Kong, I would happily jump on his back.
Joe Tippett, who plays Tim, humorously admitted his uncertainty regarding how his character would handle Kong:
I have no idea. Like, tripping on a curb, I guess. That’s how my character handled everything.
Kurt Russell provided his thoughts when asked about Lee Shaw’s hypothetical handling of Kong had he survived the finale:
I think what’s interesting is when you go back in time and flashback to where it all started. It’s the human aspect that you are focused on.
Elisa Lasowski humorously speculated that her character Duvall would stand on [Kong’s] shoulders and walk around
while hoping for good fights involving Kong and Godzilla.
Ahead of Season 2’s launch, rumors have surfaced about several potential spinoff shows within the franchise. Chris Black confirmed these possibilities but remained cautious: The conversations are still very early. The Monsterverse is vast with numerous timelines, so expansion is inevitable but undecided yet.
Although production dates remain unspecified, casting director Ronna Kress mentioned a hopeful return by next year. While on Skull Island with Apex, one can only expect that Kong will take center stage. Given how much spotlight Godzilla received initially, it appears fair that Kong catches some of that attention this time around.
