As the Golden State Warriors continue to strategize for the upcoming season, reports have emerged that Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are eyeing a key player to join their ranks. Paul George, the nine-time All-Star, has been a focal point of their interest.
According to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, both Curry and Green were 100 percent on board
with the idea of trading for George before he declined his $48.7 million player option for the next season, becoming a free agent. The Warriors tried to put together a package for him, but the Clippers found none of the offers compelling enough.
While George was interested in signing with Golden State, the current salary cap constraints make it challenging for the Warriors. Their optimal scenario was for George to exercise his player option, allowing them to trade and extend him subsequently. With that option off the table, L.A. now risks losing George entirely in free agency.
Challenges Ahead for Golden State
The situation is particularly pressing given the ages of Curry and Green, who are 36 and 34 respectively. Losing one of their key teammates might add urgency to their pursuit of new talent. Kawakami noted their eagerness stems from this context, as they prefer acquiring someone with George’s skillset.
The timing couldn’t be more critical since only a handful of teams have the cap space to offer George a max contract. Unfortunately, Golden State isn’t among them.
