The slasher In a Violent Nature, which focuses on the killer throughout, is now available for home digital release.
Directed by Chris Nash, In a Violent Nature premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It then had a theatrical run courtesy of IFC in late May. Now, it’s available on platforms like Amazon, where you can rent it for $6.99 or buy it for $14.99.
Plot Overview and Cast
According to the official synopsis: “When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.” Johnny’s undead form hunts down the teens who stole the locket, killing them one by one as he attempts to reclaim his lost relic.
The film stars Ry Barrett as Johnny, along with Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, and Lauren Taylor. Produced by Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer, it promises a chilling experience.
Cinematic Inspirations and Artistic Vision
Shudder’s Samuel Zimmerman expressed his admiration for Nash’s direction: Chris had such a clarity of vision with what this film is. It takes elements of very classical slashers and the very classical slasher aesthetic, but I understood the language he wanted to tell it in. At the time he was talking about films like Gerald Kargl’s Angst, which is one of my favorite home invasion films from Austria from the early ‘80s. It has really revolutionary cinematography, so I knew he wanted to make this artful slasher that didn’t reject the hallmarks but evolved the language of it forward and gave you a different perspective by tying you to the monster himself.
Behind the Scenes Details
Director Chris Nash shared how meticulous planning went into creating some scenes: That was one that we planned out pretty meticulously — every shot was storyboarded. We had basically three different stages of the body in three different positions to try to create the whole effect happening.
A Brutal Scene to Remember
One specific scene draws particular attention in describing its grisly nature: He flings the hook into her head, yanking the chain to pull her head through her torso — turning Aurora into a human pretzel.
This moment is decidedly shocking and highlights some of Samuel Zimmerman’s work.
A Promising Addition to Horror Libraries
Nash’s film brings brutal and shocking elements into play while delivering an artistic take on classic slasher vibes. The anticipation continues as horror fans eagerly await its premiere on Shudder later this year.
