The journey of fostering and adopting can be filled with challenges and heartwarming moments. For Peter Mutabazi, a single father from North Carolina, the right decision
was led by his heart. With COVID lockdowns making fostering difficult, his story of opening his home to a 7-year-old when the odds were against it stands out.
A heartfelt connection
Peter’s bond with Anthony, now his adopted son, began when Anthony was abandoned by his former adoptive parents. Meeting each other at a vulnerable time forged a connection that changed both their lives. Peter recalls with emotion, Anthony would always ask me, ‘Hey Dad, when will I be officially adopted?’
A house is meant to be shared
An image of Peter and Anthony together speaks volumes about their relationship. Despite the pandemic’s restrictions, Peter felt compelled to help another child in need. When asked to take in a 7-year-old during quarantine, Peter’s initial worries were overshadowed by the thought of the boy’s uncertainty.
A house is not a blessing unless it can be shared, even in the toughest times.
A family meeting
Involving Anthony in the decision was crucial. His response greatly eased Peter’s apprehension. The teen showed maturity and empathy when he asked about the new foster child’s interests, expressing readiness to share his space and activities.
The first meeting
The little boy’s arrival marked the beginning of something special. Peter described seeing him as he arrived,I didn’t realize how tiny and unsure he would look.
However, it didn’t take long for smiles to break the ice. The boys found common ground quickly through games like Lego-building.
Trusting the heart
Pete shared on Instagram,I choose to risk it all for my family to provide a safe and loving home for a foster kid that had no place to go in the midst of coronavirus and quarantine.
This act of kindness resonates deeply with many who follow his journey.
