Sarah Michelle Gellar Joins Dexter Original Sin as CSI Chief

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is set to join the cast of the upcoming series, Dexter: Original Sin. Gellar will play Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief at Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan’s new boss.

Nina L. Diaz from Showtime described Gellar as a pop culture icon who perfectly rounds out our best-in-class cast featuring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey, among others. She added, We’re thrilled to have her return to the Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios family and join the origin story of the Dexter franchise.

New Faces for a Vintage Setting

The show, set in 1991 Miami, introduces viewers to a younger Dexter Morgan before he became the notorious serial killer we know. Taking on this role is Patrick Gibson, known for his work in Shadow and Bone and The OA. Gibson steps into the shoes initially worn by Michael C. Hall.

A Fresh Take on Familiar Characters

Alongside Gellar and Gibson, Christian Slater will portray Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father. Slater replaces James Remar who originally played the role. Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, formerly portrayed by Jennifer Carpenter, will now be played by Molly Brown.

A Glimpse at Dexter’s Early Struggles

The series focuses on young Dexter’s struggle with his violent impulses and how Harry helps him channel these tendencies through a moral code aimed at targeting only those who deserve it. This plot thread dives into Dexter’s early years working at the Miami Metro Police Department under Captain Aaron Spencer, portrayed by Patrick Dempsey.

Production Details

Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner for the original ‘Dexter’ series that aired from 2006 to 2013, returns to oversee this prequel. The original series was a multi-award winner, including four Emmys, and its follow-up, ‘Dexter: New Blood’, which aired between 2021-2022, became Showtime’s most-watched series in history.
