Ridley Scott Reflects on Not Directing Alien Sequels and His Regrets

Ridley Scott recently opened up about his thoughts on the Alien franchise sequels, expressing a deep sense of frustration for not being asked to helm the follow-ups to his iconic 1979 film. In a candid interview, Scott, currently working on Gladiator II, made it clear he was never approached to direct any of the subsequent Alien films, despite his foundational role in creating the series.

Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit

I’m the author of two franchises, Scott remarked. Most directors in Hollywood — certainly, let’s say, at my level — don’t let that stuff go. But I did ‘Alien’ as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. And ‘Blade Runner’ was my third movie. So, I had no choice because I had very tough partners.

The first Alien sequels were directed by other notable filmmakers: James Cameron, who delivered the highly praised ‘Aliens’ in 1986, and David Fincher, who took on ‘Alien 3’ in 1992.

Challenges Behind the Scenes

Scott candidly admitted that he missed directing more installments of his celebrated franchise due to the decisions made without his input. He emphasized, I was slow out the starting gate. I mean, I should have done the sequels to ‘Alien’ and to ‘Blade Runner.’ You change over the years. At that time, I didn’t want to go through it again. So Jim Cameron came in — and then David Fincher — on ‘Alien.’

An Opportunity Missed?

An interesting revelation from this discussion indicates that while Scott had initial regrets over not directing these sequels, he also noted Denis Villeneuve’s work on Blade Runner 2049. Although Scott executive produced the sequel while shifting focus back to the Alien universe with Alien: Covenant, he acknowledged Villeneuve’s efforts saying, I was regretful, although he did a good job.

The Future of Alien

The Alien franchise continues to evolve with new projects under production. Cailee Spaeny revealed details about an upcoming installment under director Fede Alvarez that will be set between Scott’s original ‘Alien’ and Cameron’s ‘Aliens’. This new film aims to blend modern filmmaking techniques with classic horror elements from the original movies.
