A decade later, Maika Monroe has no plans to outrun her breakout role. The actress recently teased that her upcoming horror movie They Follow is highly anticipated, following their sequel to 2014’s It Follows, which she’ll star in alongside returning writer/director David Robert Mitchell.
Maika spoke about the project and its promising prospects: David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant. The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it

In the original film, Monroe’s character Jay Height is terrorized by a supernatural entity that pursues her relentlessly after a sexual encounter. The original film earned critical acclaim for revitalizing the horror genre, holding a staggering 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The interest in a sequel was not new, with Radius-TWC co-president Tom Quinn teasing one as early as 2015.
Interestingly, Maika has cemented her status as a notable “scream queen.” Alongside her role in The Guest, she’s known for roles in films like Greta (2018), Villains (2019), Watcher (2022), and the upcoming project, Longlegs, scheduled to premiere on July 12 of this year.
Filming for They Follow is set to start in 2024 with production handled by Neon and Good Fear Content. Horror fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing how Monroe’s character Jay Height will evolve in this bold continuation of an already unsettling narrative.
