June Squibb recently opened up about her time filming alongside Richard Roundtree. She fondly remembers how he lit up the set with his kindness and professionalism.
Recalling a special moment, June shared, He was heaven. He was so great to work with. And we were together for that whole period of shooting. The very idea that he was behind me on the scooter was more than I could handle sometimes. He was so strong and straight, even in his 80s.
A Birthday to Remember
Squibb also reminisced about her memorable 92nd birthday. Despite not being scheduled to work, Richard Roundtree made a special trip to celebrate with her. He surprised her with two dozen red roses and joined the crew who donned white wigs in her honor. He was not called. [But] he came driving up with two dozen red roses for my birthday,
she recounted. This deeply touched Squibb, who cherishes the photo of that day, though she has chosen to keep it private.
An Endearing Presence
In Thelma, Richard Roundtree played Ben, Thelma’s steady and supportive friend, accompanying her on a quest using his motorized scooter. He was wonderful,

And it was so great to know that he was sitting behind me on that scooter. He was just lovely.
